Anaconda Scientific Name: Eunectes murinus Subfamily: Boinae Length: 6meters (20ft)
Description The world's largest snake with the exception of the Reticulated Python, being the longest. Specimens in excess of 8m (26.25ft) have been recorded. Heavier in build than the other giant, some specimens may have a central body diameter in excess of 12in. The head is relatively narrow and the neck is thick. The color is olive green marked with dark brown, almost circular, blotches down the back. Along the flanks, similar blotches have a light buff center. The eyes and the nostrils are set on top of the head which indicate a semi-aquatic habitat. Range Northern South America. Habitats and Habits Mainly Nocturnal, it lives in the rainforests and river systems of the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Never far from water, it is an excellent swimmer and preys on aquatic and amphibious animals ranging from fish and small crocodiles, to ducks and capybaras. Housing An extremely large, preferably brick built terrarium, with heavy shingle substrate with adequate washing down and drainage facilities. Feeding Small specimens: fish, mice or rats; large specimens: chickens, ducks or rabbits. |
