Green Iguana

Scientific Name: Iguana iguana

Family: Iguanidae

Length:  1.6meters (5.25ft.)

 

Description The Green Iguana is commonly available and easy to maintain, although as adults they need plenty of space. They may well bathe if you provide a suitable area of water for them. Males tend to be highly territorial. They maintain a number of females and fight off any potential rivals. The body coloration can vary quite widely which is a reflection of their extensive distribution. Some individuals are a particularly striking shade of emerald green.

Distribution  Central and South America

Diet  Plant matter and insects

Ideal Conditions  In the range of 26-35°C, with suitable basking facilities.

Sex Differences   Males have more developed skin flaps on the head than females.

Breeding   A clutch may consist of 40 eggs.
